The Head Teacher Student Welfare oversees welfare and discipline systems and co-ordinates management of student attendance, truancy and behaviour. We continually review and improve our systems with the result that our school is widely acknowledged for delivering high quality student outcomes.
Student management is so effective because of the excellent level of co-ordination and communication via weekly student welfare meetings and fortnightly learning support team meetings. These meetings are used to monitor concerns and provide support for identified students, ensure consistent discipline standards and plan whole school programs. Key features of student management include :
- A major review of the Welfare and Discipline Policy to bring it into line with current practices and procedures operating within the school.
- Excellent student welfare systems providing support for needy students to improve their educational experience and advocacy for students in times of crisis.
- Changes to discipline management including the introduction of a level system and the RISC tracking program to monitor behaviour concerns, post suspension initiatives to help students returning to school, a new detention system and a new behaviour monitoring booklet to provide positive feedback and incentives for students experiencing difficulty at school.
- Increased focus on merit through incentives and acknowledgement to encourage all students to maximise their potential. Continued promotion of the merit scheme, emphasis on achievement at formal merit and presentation assemblies, revamping of the procedures and awards for these assemblies, and recognition of student success to the whole school and the wider community.
- Behaviour mentoring and programs to assist targeted students to address issues that impede their success at school.
- Quality personal development and drug education programs that engage students and ensure they have all the right information to make the best possible lifestyle and health choices.
- Successful anti-harassment, bullying and racism programs that ensure students are aware of the issues, the consequences of inappropriate behaviour and the support that is available through counselling and mediation. Introduction of ‘Speak-Up Day’ to raise awareness and focus on school bullying.
- Continued student involvement in out-of-school programs to engage students in a variety of learning experiences and alternate school-based activities to supplement the curriculum – work placement programs, mentoring and goal-setting programs and access to various job-based training programs.
- Co-ordination of the integration programs and the work plan for the teacher’s aides.
- Introduction of vertical rolls for 2006 to provide peer support and collegiality across the school population.
