The HSIE Faculty provides opportunities for students to enrich their studies through fieldwork, excursions and competitions.

  • 7S History and Mr McCall made a film re-enacting the Mt Kembla Mine disaster of 1902 . Students wrote the script , designed props and costumes and went to Mt Kembla to film. The short film will be part of the 2006 WACKI film festival.
  • Year 10 Geography with Mr Simmons and Mr Oczos travelled to Windang to study the impact of human activity on the coast. They were assisted in their fieldwork by staff from the Illawarra Environmental Education Centre.
  • Year 11 Geography students entered the National Geographic Australia Geography competition. All students performed well with Rebecca placing in the top 1.7% of students across Australia.

7S re-enacting reactions to the Mt Kembla Mine Disaster

  • Year 11 Geography students worked with staff from the Illawarra Environmental Centre to carry out fieldwork in the rain forest at Mt Keira Scout Camp.
  • Year 10 Geography classes entered the WEESTA Junior Geography competition with a number of students achieving distinction and credit passes.
  • 7S Geography students and Mrs Derbyshire joined with the IEC in the Eco Citizen Program. They studied rainforest at Mt Keira and then designed a sustainable garden for the school. The garden is currently under construction.
  • Year 11 Geography students joined with biology students to enter the Illawarra Envirothon Competition. They performed very well in this practical fieldwork based competition.
  • Year 11 Business Studies and Geography students with Mr Oczos and Mrs Derbyshire visited Jamberoo Recreation Park as part of their studies of business management and change, marketing and tourism.
  • Year 11 Ancient History students visited the Nicholson Museum at Sydney University.
